Microsoft distributed 5,000 Samsung Windows 8 tablets among developers at its BUILD conference in September. The Windows Developer Preview PC is essentially the Samsung Series 7 Slate PC, albeit with a number of important upgrades. Now, it has emerged that the Korean electronics behemoth plans to release a Windows 8 device inspired by the Series 7 Slate next year.
According to Uhm Kyu Ho, head of sales and marketing at the company’s PC business, Samsung will release a Windows 8 device with a touch screen and a keyboard in the second half of next year. He made this revelation in an interview with Bloomberg in Seoul. This product is likely to be based on the company’s Series 7 Slate PC, he further revealed
The Samsung Series 7 is one of the main ultrabook in production by the Korean company and has always been considered one of the main rivals of the MacBook Air. This is mainly because of its design and its thickness of 2.2 cm, very similar to those of Apple’s laptop. The future, however, might hold something that would give the 7 Series more weapon against the rival Windows 8.
The news was released by Bloomberg. Future models of the Samsung 7 Series could have installed, as soon as it comes out, the new Microsoft operating system, ie Windows 8. Allegedly, the next version of the “window” will be something truly revolutionary, that would open a new era for computers. There is still no long time before this union can really take place, but taking into account the characteristics of the 7 Series is really mouth watering.
This ultrabook has an Intel Core i7 2.2 GHz, a well-RAM 8 GB, 750 GB hard drive and graphics card AMD Radeon HD 6750M. In addition there are also two USB 3.0 ports, to ensure the fastest possible connection. Apart from the (obvious) took inspiration from the MacBook Air, this new product from Samsung promises real wonders and a version with Windows 8 could be the real rival of Apple Computer in the field of super thin laptops. Too bad, though, that definitely will not see this union before the second half of next year. We will wait with much anxiety.
We’ve only just finished playing with theSamsung Series 7 Slate which features the touch unfriendly Windows 7, but it seems as if the South Korean manufacturer is already getting ready to launch a Windows 8 Slate in 2012.
According to a report in Bloomberg, Samsung will bring a Series 7 tablet with Windows 8 to market in the second half of 2012. Only a couple of months ago, we saw Microsoft show offWindows 8 running on a Samsung tablet and even gave away a whole load of them to developers.
The tablets given to the developers at the BUILD conference were slightly different to the Series 7 Slate 700T we reviewed, as they had 3G and USB 3.0 included.
The Windows 8 tablet is likely to be a modified version of this tablet according to Uhm Kyu Ho, head of sales and marketing at Samsung’s personal-computer business.
Samsung also confirmed that the Series 7 tablet is aimed at business users, though with the £1,000 price tag, we could have guessed that for ourselves.
Owners of the current Windows 7 Slate will get an upgrade to the much more touch-friendly Windows 8, though Samsung declined to say when this would happen.
Indeed Samsung doesn’t even include the Slate as part of its tablet sales, along with the likes of the Galaxy Tab 10.1, preferring to group it with laptop sales. The South Korean company is hoping to boost laptop sales by 80 per cent to 18 million units globally this year.
While we certainly liked a lot of what the Series 7 Slate 700T had to offer, the fact that Windows 7 just doesn’t work on a touchscreen device was always going to be a problem. Will the addition of Windows 8 make it a winner? Let us know what you think in the comments
