CES 2012: LightPad Technology For Android, iOS and Blackberry (Features)

CES 2012 is bound to have some of the strangest gadgets on display once it gets going, with manufacturers that are showing off quirky and amusing devices to entice people to buy their wares. Take QP Optoelectronics’ LightPad for example. It’s a 11-inch screen with a keyboard, and functions very much like a normal laptop or notebook that can run 7 hours straight without charging, 854 x 800-inch resolution, and a rather unique 3-part form. However, those are not the only things the LightPad has to offer. In fact, being used as a laptop is not the highlight of the device.

It’s compatible with any smartphone that runs on any major mobile OS (Android, BlackBerry, iOS, Win) via HDMI and MHL ports, and be used as a screen. Switch the rear projector around and point it at a wall or screen, and you can have up to 60 inches of video and images directly from your phone without having to go through the process of uploading and transferring, or squinting just to see the details on the very little screens on a phone. You can also be assured that the projection is in HD thanks to the projector. It’s an energy-efficient pico-projector that provides high quality displays due to high contrast and high gain.
It sounds pretty good, but only if you have a smartphone. The LightPad is really only meant to be an accessory to a smartphone, as it has no trackpad. The brightness of the projections are also sure to be hindrances. As pico-projectors lack the kind of technology the bigger projectors have, outside sources of lighting may be needed to help make the projections clearer.

These specs are only for the base model though- QP Optoelectronics also has another LightPad model set for 2013, and hopefully this one wont have the same obvious flaws as the one being released in the middle of 2012.
